STATEMENT

As a photo artist and photographer, I engage in the use of digital technology during my daily routine as part of my photographic journey. I utilize the latest technological advances to enhance and improve my images and fine tune them to my liking.

Expanding my portfolio, which contains an eclectic mix of street photography, abstract images and montages fuels the never-ending search for unusual, compelling and striking images to satisfy my passion for the art of photography.

In a world saturated with visual images, I make certain that my photographs and montages are unique, original and have genuine interest to me. As I look to my environment, I carefully choose subject matter that begs to be photographed, whether serious, mundane, romantic or whimsical. I have become increasingly aware of my surroundings, looking to discover images from everyday and unexpected sources.

The moment a photograph is born, the interpretation of the photographer’s world becomes visible. My years of experience with photography have taught me that a great photograph may result after many hours of labor, or simply as a spontaneous occurrence. Some of my most memorable and emotion evoking images were captured “in the moment” never able to be duplicated as it existed in that precise space and time. As a result, I am prepared for those moments and always have my camera by my side.

My use of photography, not only in its traditional form, but as a tool to create photo-based artwork has increased dramatically in my quest to create and archive new, original and unusual images in my portfolio.

What I see and capture must satisfy both my eye and my soul and also have visual impact that will evoke a feeling or reaction within the viewer with whom I strive to have a similar connection. Since my photographs and montages are conceived with the notion to be seen, pondered and enjoyed, the emotional connection with the observer completes the intent of my artistry.

BIO/CV

My career began with the study of Fine Art and Art Education at JCSC in 1970. Upon completion of my Master’s Degree, I began teaching Art in the Bayonne School District while creating and producing my own individual artwork.   My early works were based in Commercial Art and Design.

For the last two decades, I have focused on Photo Art and Digital Photography. During this time I exhibited my work in numerous juried shows and participated in local, national and international competitions enjoying much success. To date, I have received 40+ awards for my efforts.

In June of 2014, I retired from teaching after 39 years of service to pursue my Photo Art and Photography full time and continue exhibiting my work.   On average, I participate in approximately 30-40 photography and art exhibits annually.

STATEMENT

I have always expressed myself through visual images: sometimes abstract and sometimes representational.  I just feel comfortable either way.   As I have matured I have found it more important to follow my strongest emotional perceptions.

I have always felt the need to be visual.  I see in line, color and shape.  Today I consciously think this way.  It is how I am most comfortable.

I spend many hours trying to work out how to convey my messages.  I most of all love what I do in trying to communicate.

I am most happy when I connect with my viewers.  So feel free to let me know how you perceive my language.  Hopefully I will help you see the familiar scenes in a new way.

BIO/CV

I have always been interested in art since I saw what magic I could do with crayons when I was little.

I majored in Art a Woman’s College of the University of North Carolina and received a graduate degree in Art from Columbia University.  I also did postgraduate work at the Mason Gross School of Arts in New Brunswick, New Jersey.

I became a public school art teacher, a career I pursued for 38 years.  Marriage and two children diminished my output but I always drew or painted.  My drawing books go with me to meetings – everywhere.

My influence at the University of North Carolina was abstract expDontonism.  Don’t look for gloomy prognostications in my abstract art.  You will discover joy in the dancing colored circles and forms in my abstract paintings.

Trips to Maine created an interest in the charming Maine harbors and flowers, flowers, flowers.  The New Jersey shores. The Delaware and Raritan Canal, the New Jersey mountains, where my daughter and grandchildren live, and Lake Nelson, where I live, are local scenic interests.

Delight in what I see is always evident in my work – whether done in pencil, watercolor, gouache, and acrylic, tempura, or oil.  My love of sheer form and color from my abstract expressionism influence is evident in my more realistic renderings.

My paintings and sculpture have been exhibited at the Munson Gallery, New Haven, Ct.; the Ceres Gallery, New York City; the International Wild Fowl ShMD, Ocean City, Md.; and at many one woman shows as well as group local shows in New Jersey.

I am a past member of the New Jersey Printmaking Council and the Edison Art Society (Edison Artist of the Month – September, 2002. the Suburban Artist’s Guild (Corresponding Secretary 2002 – 2004, Membership Chairperson 2005 -2006), the Somerset Art Association and the Garden State Watercolor Society – Associate Member, the New Jersey Art Association – Associate Member, the Pine Shores Art Association, and the New Jersey Watercolor Society – Associate Member.  Today I show with The Contempary Art Group.   I have won awards for both my paintngs and sculptured decoys.  My works are present in many private collections.  I continue to teach part/time at the Piscataway Township Senior Center.

STATEMENT

I paint in Egg Tempera, the subject matter often the Human Figure but I have interests in Still Life and Landscape. I started painting in the Egg Tempera technique at the duCret School of the Arts when I purchased Robert Vickery’s book on the technique from Watson & Guptill. I like Egg Tempera over Oil because of the quick drying characteristics, good detailing and the ability to glaze colors. I’am also interested in drawing in Silverpoint, Goldpoint, pencil and pen & ink. I have interest in movement,  change,  atmosphere and detail.

Born in Bremen/Germany, currently residing in Morris Plains, NJ.

Following a professional career in ocean transportation, specifically in the chemical tanker industry, Gerd took a course in screen printing at the Printing Council of New Jersey in Branchburg, NJ, during the second half of 2011.

While Gerd’s art (acrylic paint on paper) is often nostalgic in its subject matter, each image is created with the intent to jump right off the paper into the onlooker’s eyes. The use of a bright color scheme aids towards this goal. The sense of direct contact with the viewer provides the images with an air of spontaneity, making them feel contemporary and unique.

Gerd’s oeuvre is very much influenced by the works of Andy Warhol, Robert Indiana and to some extent also by Franz Marc.

STATEMENT

Sheilia has been taking pictures since she was a child, chronicling all the events while growing up in an artistic family in Westport, Connecticut. Her father, Samuel Reindorf came to the United States from Toronto on a scholarship to the Art Students League.  He had his own advertising agency in New York City and had a studio in his home in Westport where he painted.  He wanted his daughter, Sheilia, to become a concert pianist and she won a scholarship to attend Juilliard School of Music, followed by her brother Mark, a concert violinist.  Samuel and his wife Esther, retired early to an artists’ colony in San Miguel de Allende, Mexico 50 years ago. In San Miguel, Samuel continued to paint and had shows of his paintings in the United States, Mexico and Canada.  His paintings are in many private collections and a book of his paintings by Alpine Fine Arts Collections was published in 1983. Sheilia’s twin sisters, Lisa and Wanda are both accomplished painters and have had sold out shows in San Miguel, New York City, and Boston, where they both live. Her youngest sister, Nicole, plays the cello and is working on stained glass.

Through her music contacts, Sheilia became interested in jazz and is now on the board and Publicity Vice President of the New Jersey Jazz Society.  After marriage and raising three children of her own, she began to develop her love of photography.  Sheilia became involved with the Cranford Camera Club, now the Cranford/Millburn Camera Club, and went on to become President of that organization.  She has attended several workshops, the Great American Photography Workshop in California and Crested Butte, Colorado with nature photographers, John Shaw, Bill Fortenoy and Cliff Zenor and Santa Fe Workshops with Reid Callanan both in Santa Fe and San Miguel De Allende, Mexico.  She also attended a workshop in Cape May with Nancy Ori and then became involved with the NJ Photography Forum run by Nancy Ori.

In addition to being the founding past President of the Contemporary Art Group, Sheilia is involved with several photography organizations including Unique Vision, run by Ross Wagner.  It was this group that got her interested in seeing images in a special way.  Sheilia loves “seeing everyday images in a different way, that most people don’t see,” and is currently taking images of reflections and motion.  Her photograph “On Thin Ice” makes you think about what you are actually seeing.

Sheilia has exhibited her images at the Artist Framer, the Watchung Arts Center, Les Malamut Gallery in Union, The Westfield Art Gallery, the Jewish Community Center in Edison, the North Edison Library and the Millburn Library.  Her photographs are in private collections in Arizona, Mexico, Canada, Boston,  St. Maarten and New York.

STATEMENT

My greatest pleasure in painting is focusing on a scene, situation, building, or object and capturing its special character, how light plays on its surfaces, how it appeared to me at a given moment, and how it seems to invite viewing.  Those are the aspects that I hope others will also see and appreciate.  What I hope to capture is what I perhaps saw in a flash – the sun glowing on rocks on the Nova Scotia coast, flowers in my garden, hikers enjoying an Autumn afternoon, an ancient oak standing in a snow-covered meadow.   Painting is also a means to deal with life’s negative situations, things like war and violence, illness and aging.  What can we say of these and how do we express hope, resolution, and human dignity?   Like poetry, painting is a means of setting down both images and feelings about the world and its amazing variety.

BIO/CV

Though having taken an art minor in college, Don spent his adult life in corporate settings, squeezing in art-making as time allowed.  A move toward retirement – a period when he served as the director of an educational association – provided the time to return to painting.  Now fully retired, painting is an absorbing interest.

A lifelong New Jersey resident, Don was born in Elizabeth.  As a teenager, there was no greater treat than taking a short train ride to New York to visit its museums.   College in Washington, D.C. opened the treasures of the National Gallery, the Freer, the Corcoran, and the Phillips.   In the years that followed, Don spent time in the Far East and could explore the arts of Korea and Japan, courtesy of the Army.

Painting was a sometime activity in the years that followed until 2000 when Don again took up serious pursuit of art, taking courses at the New Jersey Center for the Visual Arts, the Somerset Art Association, and the Center for Contemporary Art where he regularly shows his work.

Don painted a large triptych, Turning from Violence, that hangs in the chapel of the Shrine of St. Joseph in Stirling, New Jersey.

STATEMENT

Maxine King is an award-winning artist, whose subject matter – the human figure is revealed in a dramatic setting with emphasis on design.  Exhibiting in the New Jersey/New York metropolitan area, she has had a lifetime devotion to drawing the live human form, and has developed that subject matter into enchanting thematic exposes.

King’s work features one of a kind figure drawing created from the live model.  Gesture drawings of two minutes are often combined with figures typically drawn in 20 minutes, or poses up to two hours in duration.  Background and watercolor painting are done in her studio.  Please note that no tracing is involved and that Sumi ink does not erase; the sum total is that the process ‘evolves on the spot.’

Ms. King has her Master of Arts degree from Rutgers University and her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Iowa.  She has 65 additional credits in Creative Arts at the doctoral level, Rutgers University.   Maxine is a retired elementary school art teacher, having taught art for thirty years in New Jersey and Massachusetts’ public school systems.
