STATEMENT

2014 I became interested in merging a gestural style of painting with a geometric and minimal sensibility. A series of paintings were completed as I experimented with combining abstract organic and geometric forms, expressive brush and knife work with less activated canvas. I brought both a simplicity and emotionality to the work. These paintings compared with earlier series, had a restricted or limited palette, and reflected the theme of aging and the passage of time.

The work from this series was a dialectic between past and present, control and abandon, and permanence and transcendence. I developed techniques which mirrored the meaning of the work. For example, in this series, older paintings became new as I sanded, scrapped and wiped the surface with turpentine, preserving forms and subtle burst of color that became part of the new work’s history. These pieces echoed the ways in which we carry our history within us.

After the past 16 months of nearly constant exhibiting, (three solo shows, a two-person exhibit in Germany, group exhibitions and travels), a new series began. In December 2016, I switched my format from a 48×38 rectangular canvas, and I began to work again in squares. Form, space, edges and color become a priority against a square format on linen. In this newer work I emphasize the 2 dimensionality of the picture plane and in places, leave the bare linen exposed. Each painting borrows it’s composition from the previous painting. These pieces are almost like a tribe, with genetic links.  During these 16 months I also began a series of collages. These works on paper explore color, depth and negative space. The work tends to contain parts of old oil and water-color paintings, maps, buttons and found objects, once again creating something new from the repurposed old canvas, and objects and are almost sculptural.

My latest work completed summer 2017 are still in process. In these pieces, while form and color are still primary I employ and experiment with unorthodox techniques and material. As such I am sew with silk thread on the canvas and creating collages canvases and canvases with recesses containing shards of pottery .

My work in oils, no matter how abstract, at times seem to refer to the female body. But, unlike De Kooning, and others, the abstracted and deconstructed figure is not objectified, but rather, the view is an empathic one, where the female form is seen from the inside out. I believe that one of my gifts as an artist, is to understand uncertainty, conflict and human yearnings and make those manifest in the language of paint. My work reflects the the triumphs, sorrows, losses and complexity of the human condition.

BIO/CV

Rosalia Tignini Verdun is an award-winning Italian-American portrait, still life and landscape artist.

Born and raised in Italy, she was constantly surrounded by the Italian esthetic, couture and food. She began her formal artistic journey at the Lenac Technical School of Fashion Design. After graduating, she and her family immigrated to the US. While owner of Rosalia Fashion Boutique in Brooklyn, she further nourished her passion for the arts by taking private art classes, and visiting the museums and galleries of New York. Rosalia, after taking a break to raise 3 beautiful children, returned to the fashion industry as millnery manager at Kleinfeld bridals, then worked for Brioni New York, among others.

She has fervently dedicated her time and life to continued study of the arts. A few of her influences are: the Pre-Raphaelist realists, Sorolla, Sargent, Rembrandt, and Valasquez. She also has an appreciation for the new contemporary masters: Nelson Shanks, David Leffel, Daniel Green, John Howard Sanden, and Gregg Kreutz.  Self-study and continued development with her chosen media of oil, pastel, acrylic, ink and charcoal are ever-present in her life.

Her art work is in many homes of collectors , and she has been represented by fine galleries in New Jersey. She regularly participates in group shows in New York and New Jersey.

BIO/CV

Sharon Reed is an award-winning oil painter who specializes in custom pet portraits and paintings of animals, food and whimsical subjects.

The daughter of an art teacher, Sharon has been drawing and painting for as long as she can remember, but did not initially pursue a career in art. After she earned her MBA from Rutgers and launched her career in business, Sharon realized she longed for more creative pursuits. She left her job and studied design at the New York School of Interior Design. It was there that she resumed creating art and began painting professionally.

After a friend asked her to paint a portrait of their dog as a gift for her husband, Sharon merged her love for painting with her love for animals and started her art business creating commissioned pet portraits. She was a pet sitter for ten years, and currently has a cat, “Not” and a dog, “Eve” who inspire her daily. She also paints other animals, and another one of her favorite things – food!

Committed to bringing art experiences to the community, Sharon serves on the Board of Trustees for the Westfield Art Association and is active in the Contemporary Art Group (CAG). She also teaches painting to Westfield seniors. Sharon is currently launching South Avenue Arts — a new shared art space in Garwood, NJ where people can take classes, rent studio space, and purchase art.

Sharon’s work has been exhibited at the Visual Arts Center of New Jersey, The Paper Mill Playhouse, Morris County Arts Council, Starbucks, Westfield Memorial Library, D&R Greenway Land Trust, Gallery U, Swain’s Gallery, Overlook Hospital, Mulberry House, Morris Essex Kennel Club Online Show, Boonton Dog Days of Summer and Watchung Arts Center.

STATEMENT

Capturing people, places and objects that evoke emotion and connect us – to the past, to memories, to imagination, to joy, to childhood – is my motivation. Color, shape, light and reflections are the themes that I use to explore those connections.

I employ color – from the sepia tones of vintage portraits to the bright, vibrant colors of childhood remembered and imagined. I am drawn to the way that glass reflects and distorts light, changing our perception of reality, just as the lens of memory distorts our past and reflects our present. I love iconic objects that spark recognition and draw us in, hinting at forgotten feelings and memories below the surface. Patterns created by recurring geometric and other shapes are also a major theme in my work.

The rich color, immediacy and texture created with pastels offer the ideal medium to bring these themes to life. I use these themes to explore and express our connection to people, places & objects.

FEATURED WORK

WEBSITE    cecillysullivan.com

STATEMENT

Cecilly Sullivan’s paintings are her view and vision of wild birds seen in both New Jersey and North Carolina.  She endeavors to share her view of these wild birds by photographing, drawing and then painting the birds seen on her walks on both the Delaware Raritan Canal and on the North Carolina’s Outer Banks Beaches. Her work attempts to recreate aspects of the behavior and serenity seen in her subject’s natural settings.  In addition, the beach, water and sunlight provide continually changing subtleties that add to the enjoyment and challenges in her works. She enjoys the fluidity of oil and feels this is the best media to capture the vibrant colors of these animals.

Her studies included earning a B.A. in Fine Arts at New York University.  She served as an intern at the Brooklyn Museum of Art the summer of 1973 and took a drawings connoisseurship course with Curtis Baer at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.  She studied and painted at the New School in Manhattan from 1974-1978.  In addition, she studied painting with the abstract expressionist, Sam Adler, in his New York studio from 1973-1975.

She is currently a member of The Contemporary Art Group and the Center for Contemporary Art (CCA).  Her paintings have been on exhibit at The Somerset County & Heritage Gallery, The Clarence Dillon Library.  In addition her works are also on exhibit at the Somerset County Senior Wellness Center in Basking Ridge, The Senior Center at Quail Brook, both exhibits are sponsored by the Somerset Count Office on Aging and Disability Services.

BIO/CV

Cecilly Sullivan is an artist who focuses on portraits, still lifes and landscapes. Cecilly earned a BA in Fine Art at New York University.  She volunteered at the Brooklyn Museum of Art and took a drawings connoisseurship course with Curtis Baer at the Metropolitan Museum of Art.  She studied and painted at the New School in Manhattan.  In addition, she studied painting with the abstract expressionist, Sam Adler, in his New York studio.

Cecilly has been teaching children and young adults for the past 15 years. Her love of art and children comes through in her teaching. Her goal is to give her students the tools they need to express creative visions in sketching, drawing and painting. It’s one of the biggest gifts of a lifetime to learn to see, draw and create.

As a member of the Center for Contemporary Art (CCA), she works on portraits at their open portrait sessions.  One of her portraits was on exhibit at CCA in 2012, and another of her paintings was exhibited in 2013.  Her paintings have also been accepted at two shows (held in 2012 and 2013) at the Somerset County Senior Wellness Center in Basking Ridge, that were sponsored by the Somerset Count Office on Aging and Disability Services. In addition two of her paintings were selected for an exhibit sponsored by the Somerset County Cultural and Heritage Commission (SCCHC).  Her painting of the Snowy Egret was displayed on the SCCHC’s postcard to help promote the Somerville exhibit, which was held at the Somerset County Administration building in Somerville.  Currently, she has two paintings on exhibit by the Somerset Office on Aging and Disability shows at the Wellness Center in Basking Ridge and at Quail Brook in Somerset, NJ.  As well as painting at CCA and in her home studio, she loves to walk on the beach in the Outer Banks and on the Delaware Raritan Canal.  Both provide her with inspiration for her paintings of untouched landscapes and lively beach scenes.
