STATEMENT
Cecilly Sullivan’s paintings are her view and vision of wild birds seen in both New Jersey and North Carolina. She endeavors to share her view of these wild birds by photographing, drawing and then painting the birds seen on her walks on both the Delaware Raritan Canal and on the North Carolina’s Outer Banks Beaches. Her work attempts to recreate aspects of the behavior and serenity seen in her subject’s natural settings. In addition, the beach, water and sunlight provide continually changing subtleties that add to the enjoyment and challenges in her works. She enjoys the fluidity of oil and feels this is the best media to capture the vibrant colors of these animals.
Her studies included earning a B.A. in Fine Arts at New York University. She served as an intern at the Brooklyn Museum of Art the summer of 1973 and took a drawings connoisseurship course with Curtis Baer at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. She studied and painted at the New School in Manhattan from 1974-1978. In addition, she studied painting with the abstract expressionist, Sam Adler, in his New York studio from 1973-1975.
She is currently a member of The Contemporary Art Group and the Center for Contemporary Art (CCA). Her paintings have been on exhibit at The Somerset County & Heritage Gallery, The Clarence Dillon Library. In addition her works are also on exhibit at the Somerset County Senior Wellness Center in Basking Ridge, The Senior Center at Quail Brook, both exhibits are sponsored by the Somerset Count Office on Aging and Disability Services.
BIO/CV
Cecilly Sullivan is an artist who focuses on portraits, still lifes and landscapes. Cecilly earned a BA in Fine Art at New York University. She volunteered at the Brooklyn Museum of Art and took a drawings connoisseurship course with Curtis Baer at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. She studied and painted at the New School in Manhattan. In addition, she studied painting with the abstract expressionist, Sam Adler, in his New York studio.
Cecilly has been teaching children and young adults for the past 15 years. Her love of art and children comes through in her teaching. Her goal is to give her students the tools they need to express creative visions in sketching, drawing and painting. It’s one of the biggest gifts of a lifetime to learn to see, draw and create.
As a member of the Center for Contemporary Art (CCA), she works on portraits at their open portrait sessions. One of her portraits was on exhibit at CCA in 2012, and another of her paintings was exhibited in 2013. Her paintings have also been accepted at two shows (held in 2012 and 2013) at the Somerset County Senior Wellness Center in Basking Ridge, that were sponsored by the Somerset Count Office on Aging and Disability Services. In addition two of her paintings were selected for an exhibit sponsored by the Somerset County Cultural and Heritage Commission (SCCHC). Her painting of the Snowy Egret was displayed on the SCCHC’s postcard to help promote the Somerville exhibit, which was held at the Somerset County Administration building in Somerville. Currently, she has two paintings on exhibit by the Somerset Office on Aging and Disability shows at the Wellness Center in Basking Ridge and at Quail Brook in Somerset, NJ. As well as painting at CCA and in her home studio, she loves to walk on the beach in the Outer Banks and on the Delaware Raritan Canal. Both provide her with inspiration for her paintings of untouched landscapes and lively beach scenes.
