STATEMENT

Maxine King is an award-winning artist, whose subject matter – the human figure is revealed in a dramatic setting with emphasis on design.  Exhibiting in the New Jersey/New York metropolitan area, she has had a lifetime devotion to drawing the live human form, and has developed that subject matter into enchanting thematic exposes.

King’s work features one of a kind figure drawing created from the live model.  Gesture drawings of two minutes are often combined with figures typically drawn in 20 minutes, or poses up to two hours in duration.  Background and watercolor painting are done in her studio.  Please note that no tracing is involved and that Sumi ink does not erase; the sum total is that the process ‘evolves on the spot.’

Ms. King has her Master of Arts degree from Rutgers University and her Bachelor of Arts degree from the University of Iowa.  She has 65 additional credits in Creative Arts at the doctoral level, Rutgers University.   Maxine is a retired elementary school art teacher, having taught art for thirty years in New Jersey and Massachusetts’ public school systems. King has monitored the life drawing sessions at the Center for Contemporary Art in Bedminster NJ for over a decade and also draws the nude at Alan Brown’s Studio, Woodbridge, NJ and the clothed figure at the Westfield Municipal Center.

King’s numerous awards are from The America Artists Professional League, Art Alliance, Somerset Art Association, TAWA, Visual Arts Center of New Jersey, Watchung Arts Center, Gallery 125, Brookdale Center for the Visual Arts, The Westfield Art Association, the Middlesex County Senior Art Shows and the New Jersey State Senior Shows.  Maxine has had several one-person shows. Her distinctive style is recognizable and a favorite of the public.
